In 1935, the Boston Braves acquired Babe Ruth from the New York Yankees. The Sultan of Swat couldn’t do much to help the struggling Braves as they finished at the bottom of the National League. Ruth’s time in Boston only lasted one year and the Braves were bought in 1936. The new owner wanted the fans to regain interest in the team so he recruited the local newspaper reporter to come up with a new nickname. The Braves officially became known as the Bees in1937, carrying that nickname until the end of the 1940 season.
